Development of a Practical Ultrasonic Approach for Simultaneous Measurement of the Thickness and the Sound Speed in Human Skull Bones: a Laboratory Phantom Study

This paper explores two non-invasive ultrasonic methods for measuring the sound velocity and thickness of the human skull bone, aimed at enhancing transcranial ultrasonic imaging and treatment. Conducted on custom-designed skull bone phantoms, the first method uses a single immersion transducer focused on the front and back surfaces, demonstrating accuracy on flat and porous samples and mapping the inner profile of curved specimens. The second method adapts the variable focus technique for linear phased arrays, offering higher accuracy and easier practical application on both flat and curved phantoms with and without inner porosity.
